Student Starpack Packaging Design Awards Open for Entry 2010

Once again the Student Starpack Awards are open for entry to students on a wide range of courses, some with a graphics emphasis and others concerned with structural and product design, as well as those from materials and technology courses.  With 10 different briefs to choose from and top prizes from top sponsors, it is no wonder this competition goes from strength to strength.  Top prizes to be won from top sponsors.

The polythene brief (Brief A) is always a challenge for students and Mike Baxter, Managing Director,  BPI Consumer - Promopack, has publicly stated that if 30 or more entries are received into this brief, then he will dye his hair purple for the Awards Ceremony!

It is pretty unlikely that any career-conversations have ever included packaging as an option, although packaging is in constant discussion in regard to materials and waste in the environment, and in retailing where most consumer goods advertise product, using pack images.  Influencing packaging design in any one of the many career paths the industry offers, from materials and structure to graphics, provides an exciting opportunity for the next generation of young designers to really make a difference.

The Starpack competition challenges students from a wide range of courses, some with a graphics emphasis and others concerned with structural/product design, as well as those from materials/technology courses, to submit solutions to problems set by brand leading FMCG companies, design agencies, and manufacturers - and win recognition of their excellence.

The expectation is that students will really challenge conventional thinking and break the rules with off-the-wall creativity and this will be the key criteria for judging success. Also, although structure and function are an important aspect of the evaluation, just as valuable,

is the understanding of the packaging as a marketing solution and how that pack beats the competition, through its use in marketing materials and how it works in the retail environment.

The Packaging Society offers the Student Starpack Awards for potential professional designers. In the past the awards have led directly to a number of employment opportunities for successful entrants.

The graduate brief is in its second year.  Design graduates from the UK's universities and colleges with aspirations for a career in packaging design have the chance to show off their talents by entering the Student Starpack Award for Graduates.

Graduate designers are being challenged to design and develop a single or multipack package for the ‘Powerade' brand to support the brand sponsorship the Olympic Games 2012. Sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company the prize includes a  £1,000 Powerade Mountain Bike and an opportunity to meet and network with the European and UK Coca-Cola Design Managers and participate in a Portfolio Workshop.

  • Deadline for entries is March 5th, 2010
  • Presentations of the Student and Schools Awards will take place on May 13th, 2010 at The Packaging Society's exciting new headquarters. The day will include a CV presentation, opportunities to network with the sponsors, winning packs on display and much much more.
