Beijing-based MAD Architects has completed its sustainable design for the Taichung Convention Center, Taiwan, using a ‘solar eco skin’.
The project’s billowing skin is a hightech, pleated system that uses a double photovoltaic glass to generate solar electricity. The outside of the material is transparent to allow natural light into the interior, while the other side of the pleat is opaque, providing shade. The design provides airflow through the building to naturally ventilate the space.
Commissioned by the Taiwanese Government, the structure is intended to blur the line between landscape and topology. MAD Architects hope the centre will become a local landmark inspiring sustainable development.
The building area is over 216,000 m2 and will have various uses including entertainment, retail, convention space, offices and parking.
