Wood The Natural Choice

28 Feb 2017

Newport & District Materials Society Lecture

John Park
Wood has been around for quite a while; in fact, it is quite possible that without it we wouldn’t be here. Half the global population, the poorer half, still relies on wood as its main source of energy for warmth and for cooking.  The other half likes to mess around with it to varying degrees to take advantage of, and to ‘improve’ on, nature and, returning to basics, some now also see wood as one of the remedies to global warming!  From turpentine to TencelÒ (lyocell), tyloses to table tops wood has provided the raw material for innumerable industries.  But even after so many centuries there always seems to be something new and fascinating cropping up.

About the Speaker

The speaker John Park qualified as a wood technologist going on to specialise in wood-frame housing and timber engineering. In the industry since 1979 he sits on several UK and European standards committees and is currently an independent consultant working in the UK.

A passionate advocate for wood, providing it is legally obtained from sustainably managed forests, John is a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (IOM3) and Chairman of the WTS since January.
