Local Heat of IOM3 Young Persons' Lecture Competition 2012

The Leeds Bradford Materials
Engineering society held the local heat of the Institute of Materials Minerals
and Mining Young Persons' Lecture competition on 16 January 2012, under the
watchful eyes of 3 judges, Dr Chris Hammond, Alan Morrell and Dr Faye
Bygrave.

The event was held at the
University of Leeds and had a record attendance of undergraduate and
postgraduate, scientists and engineers. Each participant provided a 15 minute
presentation on any subject of their choice relating to the field of Materials
Science, and were scored according to their lectures clarity, content and
structure.

The winner of the £100 prize was PhD student Rachel
Wallace of the Institute for Materials Research, SPEME, who presented a talk entitled
“Colloids: Properties, applications and
the importance of maintaining their stability.” Runners up included Chemical
Engineering student Matthew Shaw, and Materials PhD student Matthew Murray.
