The Graduate Institute of Ferrous Technology (GIFT), located in South Korea, has the ambition of leading the world in all aspects of the science of advanced steel products and processing. We have openings for candidates with an excellent and dedicated record of research in the field of iron and steel. Tenure-track professors in assistant or associate levels are sought in the following fields:
1. Computational Metallurgy (CM)
Position CM-1 Applications are invited for work on the mesoscale design of steels and associated processes by using and developing mathematical methods. The applicant should have a good working knowledge of steel metallurgy and experience with the phase-field, lattice-Boltzmann, thermodynamic phase stability calculations and dissipative particle dynamics methods. The intention is to develop new steel technologies based on quantitative design.Position CM-2Applications are invited for work on the thermodynamics and kinetics of phase transformations in steels, particularly those which occur in the solid state. An advanced knowledge of the physical metallurgy of steels is essential. The successful candidate will have a leading role in the experimental validation of quantitative predictions and concepts emerging from the Computational Metallurgy Laboratory.Position CM-3Applications are invited for work on ab initio calculations on multicomponent steels using the most advanced first principles techniques which rigorously incorporate magnetic terms and at the same time exploit the full potential of the lattice. The successful candidate will be expected not only to develop the methods but also to bring them to a state where the results can be exploited in a technological context.
2. Materials Design (MD)
Position MD-1 The applicants should have an excellent record of research in ferrous alloys and steel microstructures, with a focus on the advanced micro-structural analysis methods and microstructure-properties relations. A combination of both industrial experience in the steel industry, academic excellence and extensive hands-on experience with micro-structural analysis tools, such as e.g. SEM, TEM, Atom Probe, etc. are considered essential to fulfill the requirements of the position. The position is for individuals with the potential to lead the Microstructures Division of the Materials Design laboratory at GIFT. The applicant will also be expected to participate actively in the design and the teaching of an original course in advanced steel microstructures characterization.Position MD-2The applicants should have an excellent record of research on automotive materials. A combination of industrial experience, academic excellence and proven expertise in the field is considered essential to fulfill the requirements of the position. The position is for individuals with a potential to lead the Automotive Steels Division of the Materials Design laboratory at GIFT. The design of 3rd generation advanced high strength steels for automotive applications is expected to be the main area of research in this unit. The applicant will be expected to participate actively in the design and the teaching of an original course on automotive materials production, processing, properties and applications.Position MD-3The applicants should have an excellent record of research on soft magnetic materials, preferably but not limited to Si-steels, with a focus on the characterization methods for magnetic materials. Industrial experience, academic excellence and proven expertise in the area of electro-magnetic materials characterization are considered essential to fulfill the requirements of the position. The position is for individuals with a potential to lead the Electrical Steels Division of the Materials Design laboratory at GIFT. The applicant will also be expected to to participate actively in the design and the teaching of an original course on soft magnetic materials.
3. Surface Engineering (SE)
Position SE-1 The applicants should have a solid background of metallurgy and electrochemistry with an outstanding experience in corrosion research. The successful candidate should have experience in corrosion resistant alloy design and protective coatings with in-depth knowledge of aqueous corrosion testing and surface analysis techniques. Experience in modeling of life time prediction will be highly regarded.
Position SE-2 The applicants should have a good research experience in galvanizing with a solid back ground of steel metallurgy. The successful candidate should have experience in galvanization of new grade high-strength steels with in-depth knowledge of aqueous corrosion or high temperature oxidation of steel. The industrial experience in galvanizing will be highly regarded.
4. Environmental Metallurgy (EM)
Position EM-1 The qualified candidates should have an excellent record of research and education in areas of innovative technologies to meet the environmental issues such as technologies for the reduction, removal and sequestration of CO2 (in particular mineral sequestration) at different stages of iron and steel making processes, and low carbon process to produce iron and steel.
Position EM-2 The qualified candidates should have an excellent record of research and education in areas of advancements in conventional technologies of ironmaking such as discrete element methods simulation of granule flow (DEM and CFD coupling simulation) in BF, DEM simulation of communition processes of coke and ores, and development of heat recovery processes from industrial wastes.
5. Materials Mechanics (MM)
Position MM-1 Applicants should have a solid background in the area of metal plasticity. The selected candidate will perform research in the area of metal forming and material characterization for single phase and multi-phase alloys, in particular for advanced steels (AHSS, stainless steel, etc.). He will develop innovative forming processes for high strength materials and advanced techniques for formability assessment. He will design novel testing methods for the characterization of material properties and failure. The selected candidate is also expected to be involved in the areas of constitutive modeling of advanced high strength steels as well as finite element simulations of forming processes and product performance.
6. Alternative Technology (AT)
Position AT-1 Candidates are required to have the knowledge and experience of both numerical modeling of phase transformation and experimental work of ferrous alloy development. The experiences of research and research management in the steel industry more than 5 years are also essential. (The position is expected to make linkages between the other fields of various ferrous materials and manufacturing processes.) Position AT-2Candidates are required to have deep theoretical knowledge of alloys and magnetism, and expected to work in the area of atomic-scale modeling of ferrous materials with first principles and/or molecular dynamics method. In addition, he/she should have a strong network with internationally leading scientists. Experiences with computational facility management and software development are also essential.
7. Control and Automation (CA)
Position CA-1 Candidates are expected to have knowledge in control theory as well as its applications.
Position CA-2 Candidates are expected to have deep knowledge in sensors, industrial measurements and automation technology.
8. Clean Steel (CS)
Position CS-1 Candidates are expected to have deep knowledge in fluid dynamics applications to steel refining and casting with activities both in physical modeling and computational fluid dynamics.
Position CS-2 Candidates are expected to have deep knowledge in high temperature physic-chemistry and thermochemistry in chemical metallurgy of steel. It is desirable for the candidates to be knowledgeable in thermodynamic modeling of slag/flux systems.
Position CS-3 Candidates are expected to have deep knowledge in solidification and casting of steel. The successful candidate should have expertise in macro- and micro-analysis of solidification with modeling capability. Candidates must hold a doctoral degree in the relevant area. Entry positions may be at the Assistant and Associate level, depending on the merits of the individual applicants.
