Job description

Banah UK Ltd is a growing company that requires a new Research and Development Lab Supervisor. An excellent opportunity for a committed individual to work at the cutting edge of sustainable cement development and be involved in a brand new product development.

Working as part of the research team the successful candidate will participate in the development of new products, enhance existing products and contribute to the maintenance of collaborative partnerships that will assist the company to grow in a profitable manner. Under direction they will supervise, assign, review and participate in the day to day project management and task allocation of the R&D/QC laboratory, ensuring work quality, development of and adherence to established policies and procedures; providing training on proper laboratory test procedures and sample collection processes; care and maintenance of laboratory equipment; and making significant technical contribution to the development of novel cements and binders for the construction industry.

Key Responsibilities:

The following duties are typical for this position. The successful applicant may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set out below to address business needs and changing business practices.

 

  • Work with the Director of Research and Development to plan, prioritise, assign, supervise, review and participate in the work of staff responsible for QC and R&D activities within the lab.

  • Oversee the organising, implementation and monitoring of research activities to ensure they are carried out to a high standard and brought to a successful completion.

  • Provide detailed input to the research team to help build understanding of the chemistry in geopolymer and alkali aluminosilicate systems, develop new geopolymer products and continuously improve the company’s current offering.

  • Take responsibility for the day-to-day running of the laboratory while making significant technical contributions to ongoing product development.

  • Participate positively in existing external relationships which the company has with universities, institutes or other organisations and seek new relationships for the purpose of acquiring new knowledge and/or gaining access to technology in order to improve and develop the company’s product range.

  • Participate in the scoping and writing of research proposals for funding bodies.

  • Perform routine and complex laboratory analyses, recognising and correcting errors.

  • Oversee maintenance and calibration of in-house test equipment and assist in the selection of new equipment.

  • Participate in the presentation of the company’s products to stakeholders through the use of visual presentations and attendance at trade shows, addressing all scientific related questions.

  • Work with potential customers to assist in the development of end products that perform to the required standard.

  • Maintain appropriate documentation of results and data and prepare publications of conclusions stemming from company research and development projects for the management team and relevant external parties.

  • Participate in the preparation and administration of the R&D budget and be accountable for expenses related to development projects.

  • Liaise with regulatory bodies as required.

  • Continuously update knowledge of relevant scientific research techniques and participate in continuous professional development activity.

  • Provide support and mentoring to junior technical staff.

  • Participate in the development and implementation of Company quality control policies and proceduresmake recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures.

  • Work to and maintain health and safety procedures and general policies.

  • Ensure the laboratory is well stocked, resourced and maintained.

  • Conduct large scale concrete trials using heavy equipment.

  • Any other duties, within reason and capability, to meet the needs of the company as determined by the Director of Research and Development.

  • Degree in science, geology or chemical engineering.
  • PhD in a relevant scientific discipline.

Relevant Knowledge and Experience

  • At least 2 years’ experience at a supervisory level within a research laboratory environment including interpretation of results and maintenance of records.
  • Project management experience.
  • Principles of supervision, training and performance evaluation.
  • Knowledge of regulations impacting on scientific research.
  • Awareness of the implications of Health and Safety in a laboratory.
  • Post-doctoral work experience in a materials sciences laboratory.
  • Knowledge of silicate chemistry.
  • Understanding of construction materials testing.

  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, including highly developed presentation and influencing skills.
  • Proven ability to supervise, organise and review the work of a laboratory team.
