Packaging Technical capability is a key strategic priority for Pladis. Growing our core and driving innovation is a critical part of Pladis’ business model along with continuous improvement in quality and cost.  The role holder is a member of the Pladis Technical R&D team, reporting to the Global Packaging Productivity Lead.

The role will work with the extended team members across the broader Pladis organisation, as necessary, to deliver projects. There is a matrix structure within the Group Packaging Development Team that enables continuity of business support and skilled support to particular packaging material technologies and machinery interface. Networking with the Group Packaging Development team to help drive Pladis wider packaging agenda will also require regular interaction with teams based different locations within Pladi. Role is based in Hayes / High Wycombe or in one of the Northern UK sites (Tollcross, Manchester Liverpool), working across Pladis regions and sites as necessary to deliver technology and optimisation projects providing direct input to relevant packaging development projects and working with the technical operations team members to deliver the program.

Key areas of focus are:

  • Map existing packaging capabilities in various manufacturing sites and look to transfer best practices to other sites and create new standards to fulfill business future needs

  • Standard packaging and building packaging capabilities across the organisation

  • Support the development of the Pladis Global Manufacturing Network optimisation program

  • Own & deliver quality Packaging Specifications

  • Provide innovative, cost effective, optimised & simplified solutions

  • Create partnerships, relationships – at sites as appropriate

  • Support the building, maintenance of and delivery of an aligned Packaging program

The role is proactive in providing packaging solutions, potential value improvement programmes and Innovation in packaging related. Whilst simultaneously proactive in providing direction to other functions in respect to availability and cost of solutions and options to develop further, such as:

  • Operations – packaging functional performance
    Supply Chain/Engineering – material/machine interface performance and proposals for investment
    Marketing – key partners in driving the solutions and opportunities for the overall business plans

  • Logistics, distribution and retail – product protection and optimisation
    Procurement – strategic sourcing, supplier selection and packaging technical functional approval

    Key Responsibilities


  • Map existing packaging capabilities in various manufacturing sites and look to transfer best practices to other sites and create new standards to fulfill business future needs.

  • Provide project management documentation and communication for packaging including time-plans and risk assessments

  • Provide support to sites to ensure delivery of solutions Interface with the other Packaging team members and build on their combined expertise in the creation of new Packaging solutions, as required

  • Provide packaging expertise to support technical aspects of the Procurement strategic packaging agenda and CBR, linking to relevant members of the Strategic Material Teams

  • Delivery of the agreed Packaging programme, working closely with Marketing, Product Development and Supply Chain to introduce new/improved packaging into production and to drive continuous improvement in costs of existing packaging operations

  • Create packaging specifications in line with project requirements; ensuring legislative and regulatory compliance, fitness for purpose including functional performance related attributes and compliance aspects. Packaging specifications input to relevant Pladis packaging database

  • Lead the creation and delivery of other relevant packaging documentation e.g. cutter guides, pallet patterns, component drawings, general specifications, technical standards, travel tests and results, line trial protocols and reports

  • Attend relevant Factory Development Meetings and ensure clear communication of issues and opportunities

  • Develop success criteria and trial protocol improvements with factories for new machinery and materials including acceptance testing for major manufacturing initiatives and ensure smooth technology transfer and packaging vertical startup.

  • Hold regular meetings with suppliers and other external groups to ensure packaging knowledge is continually updated

  • Owner of relevant packaging specifications and implementation processes

  • Ensure all quality testing is carried out for new packaging formats, e.g. shelf-life, taint and odour, travel tests


  • Captures all project documentation relevant to the site (charters, time-plans, reports etc)

  • Communicates to the sites and stakeholders in all relevant functions all key information relating to current projects and initiatives, highlighting any issues.

  • Ensures that the correct project management process is followed for all projects

  • Holds post-implementation reviews
