Packaging Technologist - Pladis

Job description

The role is based in Hayes providing support for centrally lead packaging change activity across own Pladis and co-packing operations.

As a key member of the R&D team, the Packaging Technologist will responsible for leading packaging development activity in close collaboration with Commercial, Procurement and NPD teams among others. The jobholder will manage own Plaids and RB (retailer brands) packaging projects focusing on reducing cost, without compromising functionality, quality or our markets. The Packaging Technologist will also be in regular contact with packaging suppliers and provide technical input on packaging related manufacturing or quality problems.


Key areas of focus are:

  • Build, maintain and deliver an aligned Packaging programme

  • Own & deliver quality Packaging print layouts, materials specifications and pallet plans

  • Provide innovative, cost effective, optimised & simplified packaging solutions

  • Create partnerships, relationships across both internal and external partners

Key Responsibilities

  • Developing specific packaging formats across Pladis and RB portfolios, managing the changes going through the system and supporting the continuous improvements being made

  • To ensure appropriate packaging formats are delivered into the market: Develop new packaging that meets category standards for Quality, Functionality, Cost-Effectiveness, Consumer Acceptance, Stability, Regulatory Compliance, and operational feasibility

  • Executes projects on a day-to-day basis within supporting Factory Technical teams:Establish packaging materials & dimensions, in coordination with suppliers and the Origination team

  • Support project innovation and idea generation processes to ensure alignment with the Packaging Strategy: Produce packaging prototypes / mock ups according to packaging brief to illustrate technical possibilities and assist in determining development directions (including physical, line, distribution, storage and shelf performance, shelf life and barrier requirements, sensory evaluation, etc)

  • Provide WPL (Wrappers print lay out) and cutter guides for artwork generations and ensure compliance of final artworks

  • Create packaging materials specifications in line with project requirements; ensuring legislative and regulatory compliance, fitness for purpose including functional performance related attributes and compliance aspects

  • Develop new outer cases/SRP’s and pallet pattern configurations

  • Support packaging trials going through the site delivering the relevant packaging documentation e.g. cutter guides, pallet patterns, component drawings, packaging material specifications, technical standards, travel tests and results, line trial protocols and reports

  • Supporting the Pladis Central packaging team on short, mid, and long-term developments from concept through to commercialization

  • Work effectively with Group Technical and central teams to develop packaging cost reduction projects

  • Ensure completion of technical Packaging documents for new products and processes for commercial scale-up, (e.g.: finished product specifications) and that all quality testing is carried out for new packaging formats, e.g. shelf-life, taint and odour, travel tests

  • Develops and maintains effective working relationship partners within R&D and support other non-R&D functional team members (e.g.: operations, quality, procurement)

  • Arrange meetings with suppliers and other external groups to maintain positive relationships

    Essential Experience, Skills and Qualifications

  • Packaging experience, ideally in Food Manufacturing environment in a ‘hands-on’ Packaging Technical/R+D role with competency across a broad range of packaging materials and their respective machinery interfaces

  • Experienced on printed flexibles, folding cartons, tins, corrugated board and thermoformed packaging components desirable

  • Knowledge of Packaging technology and processes; Planning, managing and reviewing factory trials including Packaging Testing methods, Transit Tests, etc

  • Expertise in Packaging materials printing methods, e.g., Flexo, Litho, Gravure, etc

  • Sound understanding of: Lean principles, Continuous improvement, Business terminology, Product to Market

  • Technical Systems, etc

  • Basic Food Hygiene

  • Degree level or equivalent in a Packaging / Engineering discipline.

  • Systems and software knowledge to include Microsoft packages

Packaging Technical competency is a key strategic priority for pladis, where effective and timely delivery and implementation of packaging solutions (NPD, CBR, and continuous process improvement) are critical to the growth of Pladis and to maintain competitive advantage.
