Job description

The Laboratory Technician will be a graduate metallurgist seeking a first substantive post or a more experienced laboratory technician seeking to develop their carrier. They will be part of a small team providing technical support, analysis and reporting to our operations and technical functions. The role is at the heart of our business and provides an excellent platform from which to develop in technical expertise or into other functional areas such as manufacturing, planning or commercial. This growing business represents an excellent opportunity working for an established manufacturing company based in the West Midlands, but supplying the world. We supply steel products to global hand tool brands like Black & Decker, Stanley, Morse and G-Man, and to industrial cutting and blade applications, selling in over 55 different countries. Our product, although simple to look at, is highly technical in manufacture. The business will set a benchmark in service and product capability, but will be driven by its ability to differentiate through innovation, customer focussed engineering and technical capabilities. The Laboratory Technician will play key role in developing and improving our processes, innovating around products, and supporting customers, suppliers and the management team.

The candidate will work in a metallurgical laboratory and in the operational plant environment  carrying out monitoring and analysis to provide recommendations and information to the wider business. They will both participate in and will lead trials and projects that make an impact on the business. They will work for the Quality and Technical Manager, and will work with a second Laboratory Technician, with the business Quality Manager and with a plant metallurgist.

The post holder will monitor and advise on the performance of the operations, will investigate product and process quality, producing data, reporting on performance, measuring against set standards.

The position requires graduate level metallurgist or equivalent capability candidate who is looking to take their first technical position or to continue their development in a technical environment. A knowledge of the steel products and processes used within the production of special steel strip is desirable but not essential. Full training and support will be given to the successful candidate, who will be encouraged to continue their professional development. The role requires the ability to self-manage and strong communication and problem solving skills. The Jobholder must have the ability to work under pressure and to tight timescales.
