Uncovering Sheffield's Metallurgical Past - Ken Barraclough Memorial Lecture

23 Mar 2010, Royal Victoria Holiday Inn, Sheffield, UK

SMEA Lecture with Sheffield Industrial History Society

Ken Barraclough Memorial Lecture - Uncovering Sheffield's Metallurgical Past

Lecture begins 18:00. Tea & coffee from 17:30. Followed by SMEA Members Dinner at 19:30.

Dr James Symonds, Regional Director, ArcHeritage has agreed to present the 2010 Ken Barraclough Memorial Lecture on the theme, ‘Uncovering Sheffield’s Metallurgical Past’.  While Director of ARCUS at the University of Sheffield, Dr Symonds has established an international reputation for his work on industrial archaeology.  Recently he has set up ArcHeritage, a trading company of York Archaeological Trust, based in Sheffield.

He will describe recent archaeological work on steelmaking and cutlery manufacturing sites in Sheffield.  He believes that the cultural heritage of the city and Sheffield’s metalworking past must be at the heart of any new identity, and that an industrial archaeology that highlights the individual and collective skills and persistence of former inhabitants has a major role to play in the remaking of the 21st–century city. http://arcus.group.shef.ac.uk/
