The Future of Copperopolis's Past - Regenerating the sites of Swansea's Copper Industry

09 May 2012, National Waterfront Museum / Swansea Community Boat, Swansea, UK

South Wales Materials Association Lecture

Prof Huw Bowen - Swansea University

During the nineteenth century the Lower Swansea Valley dominated world output of smelted copper, a process that gave rise to Swansea’s emergence as ‘Copperopolis’. This talk examines how and why Welsh copper smelting became the first globally integrated heavy industry.  It also considers the current project led by Swansea University and the City and County of Swansea which is facilitating the heritage-led regeneration of the internationally significant site of the former Hafod and Morfa works.

Note: the Talk will take place with an introduction at Swansea's Waterfront Museum, followed by a cruise up the River Tawe on the Swansea Community Boat (www.scbt.org.uk) which is a floating classroom promoting the local heritage. Refreshments will be served on the boat.
