Moving design upstream in Research and Development

20 Jan 2010, The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, London, UK
Research and development (R&D) and design are strongly linked. Through design, research into new materials processes and technology can be realised into products and services; and R&D provides new opportunities for creativity in design in a wide range of applications including consumer products, buildings, transportation.

Although the UK is internationally strong in both design and R&D, how well do we exploit the synergies between these areas of expertise? How do the R&D and design communities differ, and how closely should they be encouraged to work together?

The Materials Knowledge Transfer Network (Materials KTN) brings together the R&D and design communities through its focus on materials. The R&D Society seeks to develop the environment for UK R&D in all its forms. Together, at this event, they seek to address these issues and spark a debate about the role and relationship of design and R&D.

Speakers will present a series of short presentations that illustrate where design and R&D can work together effectively, followed by a panel discussion with the audience.

The speakers are:

    * Geoff Hollington, Design Mentor, Materials KTN (Chair)
    * Bernie Rickinson, CEO IOM3 and Director, Design Exchange, Materials KTN
    * Neil Barron: Principal Designer and Managing Director, Gusto Design
    * Dr Chris Crockford, Business Development Director, McLaren Electronics Limited
    * Dr Guido Gybels, Director of Technology, The Royal National Institute for Deaf People
    * David Maddison, Maddison Product Design
