Geosynthetics

13 May 2010, The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, London, UK

South East Plastics and Rubber Group Evening Lecture

Lecture given by Celine Lechat of Cobham Technical Services

Event takes place from 5.00 - 7.00 p.m.

How to solve civil engineering problems using polymers

Geosynthetics are relatively new products in the construction industry, their first use dating back to the 1950's. Since then they have been more widely used, and new products have been developed. They encompass different types of products, such as geotextiles, geogrids or geomembranes.  Each product fulfills one or several functions.(eg soil reinforcement, separation, drainage etc).  Geosynthetics can be found in various applications including embankments / steep slopes, roads, railways, landfills, tunnels and dams.  The technical challenges are high for materials being installed in the ground for tens or even hundreds of years in often aggressive environments.  the lecture will present the different types of products, the polymers used, the different functions they need to fulfill, and the mechanical and chemical tests that are required to ensure a safe design of the structures in which they are to be installed. Anyone interested in polymer testing and applications in the construction industry should attend.

Programme

Refreshments(sandwhiches, tea and coffee and a glass of wine) will be served.
