Founders' Lecture - Process Development in Steel Research

11 May 2010, Centuria Building,, Middlesbrough, UK
Cleveland Institution of Engineers Evening Lecture

Lecture given by Dr Gene Donald Spenceley, MBE, PhD,  FIMMM

Lecture begins at 5.30 for 6.00 p.m.

The progress of a number of research projects are analysed to determine the key factors involved in the methodologies for process development in the Steel Industry.
These include research strategy, generation of ideas, process development stages, the role of pilot plant, intellectual property, staff disciplines, research funding and recording of completed work.
The projects, in which the author was involved, cover experiences as a Project Leader and Research Manager in Mechanical Working and Steelmaking Processes at BISRA in Sheffield and subsequently at the Teesside Laboratories of British Steel Corporation and British Steel plc. The studies ranged in scope from research to improve the performance of production plant to innovations aimed at complete replacement of existing technology.
The time lapse between completion of the research and the present allow observations to be made on the level of success in deployment of the developed technology
