Faster, Higher, Stronger: Hero Materials in Sport

15 May 2012, University of Bath, Bath, UK

Faster, Higher, Stronger

By Dr Jenni Tilley

Hero Materials in Sport International athletes push their bodies to the limit in their bid to break records. To have a hope of beating themselves and others they must be both talented in, and
dedicated to, their chosen sports.

But would they really smash so many records without the help of Materials Scientists?  This talk will explore three seemingly mundane polymeric materials - polyurethane, carbon fibre and tendon - that have made 'Faster, Higher, Stronger' an exciting, and sometimes controversial, reality in recent years.

Dr Jenni Tilley won the IOM3 Young Persons' Lecture Competition final and represented the UK in Brazil at the World Lecture Competition fina.
