The Materials Entrepreneur: How to Take Your Innovations Forward

19 Apr 2010, IOM3, London, UK

Organised by the Institute of Materials and Mining (IOM3)

REGISTER HERE (opens new window)

Innovation is viewed as increasingly important due to the challenges of globalisation, emerging technologies and economic uncertainty. Spin out companies which capitalise on a bright idea that has been developed in the laboratory are the dream of many scientists, and this one day conference will go through the steps needed to commercialise a promising idea. Including all of the vital stages from writing the business plan to pricing the product, this practitioner based event has been tailor made to cover all of the important information required to take your innovation forward, presented by experts in each of the fields. The programme is split into four complementary sessions:

Session one will look at idea generation, development, open innovation and Intellectual Property (IP) protection.

Session two will focus on winning funding to develop the business, looking at how to write a business plan that attracts investors, Business Angels, and Government, Regional and seed corn funding.

Session three will develop ways of marketing your business and yourself effectively, including product pricing for profit and growth.

Session four will investigate taking risks, making decisions, and learning from setbacks. The day will finish with a look at two relevant case studies.

There will be ample opportunity throughout the day for delegates to discuss their ideas with the expert speakers, to network with other like-minded entrepreneurs, and to come away inspired to take their ideas forward in 2010.

Early booking is recommended for this event, as delegate places are limited, and we envisage a large take up of places due to the possibility of highly valuable direct contact with the expert speakers in this field.

This event is approved by the Institute for 6 hours of professional development.

IOM3 members can access their personal online CPD record by logging in and clicking on the My Profile link, top right.

Student Bursaries

Bursary places sponsored by the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Cobalt Development Institute, the UK Centre for Materials Education (UKCME) the Modern Built Environment Knowledge Transfer Network (MBE KTN), the Materials KTN and the Copper Development Association (CDA) are being offered to a total of sixteen student entrepreneurs. If you wish to be considered for a bursary, please send a 300 word application to Dawn Bonfield by 26 March explaining how your attendance at this event will be of benefit to your career, mentioning any innovation that you are currently working on. The MBE KTN are particularly looking to sponsor a student with an innovation applicable to the built environment, and would like to offer further help with this innovation to their chosen bursary recipient. Similarly the Materials KTN would like to sponsor four students who are looking for help with a materials related innovation and who would be interested in working with the Materials KTN to take their innovation forward.

Please ensure that you include your full affiliation and contact details (i.e. postal address) and please do not send your application as a pdf attachment (since this makes it difficult to copy and paste the text to send to thejudges).
