From Cookery to Chemistry - A History of Adhesive Bonding

From Cookery to Chemistry - A History of Adhesive Bonding

Paul Fay, Ford Motor Company, Dunton Technical Centre

6 pm for 6.30 pm start

Abstract:

Adhesive perform in a very valuable role in our lives today, but when were they first used and how did the industry develop? In this wide-ranging lecture, Paul Fay will look back over the history of adhesive bonding, covering evidence from Neolithic remains, Biblical references, Egyptian tombs, classical written works from the Ancient Greeks and Romans, and examples from medieval art, literature and philosophy. This will lead into the industrialisation of glue production and, finally, into the era of synthetic polymers.

About the Speaker:

Paul Fay is a Graduate Mechanical Engineer (BSc from Bristol), who started at Ford in 1983. For many years, he led Ford's European research programme

into structural adhesives and became fascinated in the history of adhesive bonding. Although a change in job took him away from adhesives, he retained a strong interest in the historical aspects and has continued to investigate the subject in his spare time.

Tea & Biscuits at 1800 & a buffet at 1930 hrs. The lecture is open to non-members & is free.
