Biology in Ground Engineering: Bioremediation and Biogeotechnics

Free half day seminar covering Bioremediation science & technologies, future of biological clean-up, Biogeotechnics

The speaker will be Dr Michael Harbottle, a lecturer in geoenvironmental engineering at Cardiff University. Mike has worked at both Oxford and Cambridge universities as well as Fugro Limited, specialising in brownfield regeneration, sustainable remediation and offshore foundation design. He is currently researching the use of micro-organisms and plants in geotechnical engineering and bioremediation.

The seminar is free to attend, and lunch and refreshments will be provided.

  • Bioremediation in Context / Science Behind Bioremediation – explaining environmental biology and its relevance to ground engineering, the role of soil biology and chemistry, and bioremediation sustainability
  • Biological remediation technologies and their implementation – describing the variety of bioremediation techniques, and advantages, limitations and barriers in their use both in- and ex-situ
  • Recent developments and future prospects in biological clean-up – examining the state of the art and possible future developments in using environmental biology for ground reconditioning
