Welcome to the Institute's Light Metals Division Website

The Light Metals Division of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining was first established and approved by Council in June 2000.

The concept behind the Division was to have an organisational arm of the materials community to serve the needs of both the traditional and emerging light metals industries and enabling technologies. Committee members on the Divisional Board are therefore representative of the varying sectors from within industry, university and research centres in the UK.

The goals of the Light Metals Division are to:

Identify and direct effort toward major market sectors of strategic importance to UK industry throughout the supply chain
Identify ongoing key issues that need to be addressed in order to exploit and develop the use of these materials;
Actively promote potential scenarios and future opportunities in order to develop a UK Light Metals technology strategy
Communicate with other Institute-relevant Divisions, to achieve maximum participation and to avoid duplication amongst groups
To solicit active membership for permanent Magnesium, Titanium and Aluminium focus groups
Encourage the 'sustainable development' message for all related industries. Set up a recycling technology/action group of the Light Metals Division.

The purpose of this Divisional website is to introduce the Board and its members and to highlight our activities. We hope that you find this useful and welcome any constructive feedback.
