Luke Buskie, ConocoPhillips, Scotland's Finalist

Luke was born in Aberdeenshire and completed primary and secondary schooling in a small nearby town called Banchory. He attended Strathclyde University and was awarded a first class degree in Mechanical Engineering. He recently completed an MSc in Petroleum Engineering at Imperial College London. Since then he joined ConocoPhillips as a Graduate Reservoir Engineer.

Produced Water Reinjection – Theory, Application and Practice

For many years, unfiltered produced water has been reinjected into various formations in the Alwyn area of the North Sea for disposal or enhanced hydrocarbon recovery purposes. Significant performance decline has been noticed in the water injector wells, however the formation damage mechanisms and injection regime contributing to the performance decline were not clearly defined.

The purpose of this study was to:

  • Characterise the formation damage mechanisms and injection regime associated with the injector wells.
  • Suggest an improved water injection strategy for the Alwyn Statfjord depleted gas condensate reservoir.

This paper presents the first coupled application of the bottomhole pressure versus rate plot, the modified Hall integral and the Hall derivative to characterise injection well performance.
