Welcome to the Younger Members' Committee
The Institute's Younger Members' Committee was established in 1967 to represent the views and interests of its younger members, and is one of the longest running committees in the Institute's history.
Younger members account for approximately one third of the Institute's total membership and as such constitute a large and important group of members. The YMC's participation in forming policy decisions is essential and it is through these opportunities that we can make a difference.

The Young Persons' Lecture Competition
Sponsored by the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining, with support from The Worshipful Company of Armourers & Brasiers, the YPLC invites students and professionals up to the age of 28 to deliver a short lecture on a materials-related subject. Candidates compete in a series of heats organised by local affiliated societies of the Institute, from which seven regional candidates are selected to compete in the national final.
RIBA President’s Medals Awards
Each year, the winners of these awards for innovation in building design win a year’s e-membership of IOM3, which includes access to our exclusive Materials Resources for Students of Building Industries.
The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining accredits courses leading to academic and professional qualifications in engineering and other areas of materials science, as well as a range of industry-recognised packaging qualifications including the Diploma in Packaging Technology and Certificate in Packaging. See our list of UK universities offering IOM3-accredited qualifications and our guidelines on further learning.
Student awards from the Institute include four competitive prizes awarded to exceptional students on materials courses. There is also a literature review prize to encourage postgraduate students to prepare critical reviews as part of their studies.
The IOM3 Schools Affiliate Scheme was established in 1999 and has members from all over the United Kingdom and across Europe. The aims of the scheme are:
-
To proivide support and resources to enrich the teaching of the materials, minerals and mining related topics in the 11 to 19 curriculum.
-
To provide teachers with the knowledge and understanding necessary to teach these areas of the curriculum with confidence and enthusiasm.
-
To provide links to members, universities and organsiations who can provide additional support.
The scheme has an annual membership fee of £30 and includes full individual membership for a named teacher along with a range of other resources.
Design Pool is a collaboration between IOM3, the Institution of Engineering Designers and the Chartered Society of Designers offering new links particularly valuable to young, recently qualified designers and technologists who will be able to share knowledge and the benefits offered by the three organisations. Membership of IOM3, IED or CSD gives access to a unique resource called the Design Mine.
Young Engineers’ Forum
The YEF is a forum for engineering, scientific & technological organisations to share best practice in young member activities. Practically speaking, this means it is a way of helping the organisations talk to each other about young member activities learn from each other's experiences, and consequently pursue young member activities as effectively as possible.
