Local societies

The Institute has over 60 groups which represent members in the local area. Many of these groups offer support to schools through grants and presentations and teachers from member schools may also attend the evening lectures organised by these groups. They also offer a useful networking opportunity with the chance to meet local people working in the industry.

Materials, minerals and mining engineering information for teachers, parents and governors

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining aims to support those studying and working in our fields of interest at all levels from secondary school upwards.

For over ten years we have been developing resources and offering support to secondary schools, sixth form colleges and FE colleges through our Schools Affiliate Scheme, but we also offer careers information to school and college pupils and are involved in a number of initiatives to improve the materials, minerals and mining knowledge of teachers in order to give them more confidence in teaching these areas of the curriculum.

On these pages you can find out more about how the Institute can help to support you as a teacher, or how as a parent or governor, you can support your school by enlisting our services.

Careers information

We produce careers literature suitable for students from KS3 upwards which is designed to raise awareness of careers in materials, minerals and mining engineering and promote them are challenging, rewarding and exciting.

What is Materials Science and Engineering and What are Minerals and Mining Engineering are A4 flyers giving brief background to the disciplines. These are available to download for your use from the links below.

We also produce a 36 page A4 booklet entitled Takes You In All Directions. If you would like to request a copy of this booklet, free of charge, please email sarah.harrison@iom3.org. It should be noted that copies of this are limited as it is currently under review for updating.

Students may also find out about careers in materials, minerals and mining on our two related websites www.materials-careers.org.uk and www.uk-rocks.net. In addition to describing careers in our fields, these sites also provide additional information on the disciplines.

Taster courses, open days and visits

A number of universities and organisations offer open days and taster courses specific to the fields of materials, minerals and mining engineering. These are the ideal opportunity to find out more about the disciplines, the specific research interests of a particular department, and in the case of residential courses, what life at university is like.
