Students
The Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining provides a number of benefits for students. In the video below IOM3 Head of Member Services David Arthur talks to Cranfield University about openings for materials science and engineering graduates and postgraduates, and explains what the Institute can do for you.
Student membership is open to students following an approved course of study (at undergraduate or postgraduate level), leading to admission at a higher grade of membership. Proof of study is needed from the university or college.
The Institute accredits universities and colleges providing courses in materials-related degrees and diplomas - a list of accredited courses is available.
Student awards and prizes
Materials Literature Review Prize
This award aims to encourage the preparation of definitive, critical reviews of the literature by students as an essential part of study for a higher degree in the materials field, and subsequently make the best of these available to a wider readership. The prize is administered by the editorial board of Materials Science and Technology (MST). Open to any postgraduate student studying in the UK, the prize carries an award of £350.
The Institute has a number of awards specifically for graduates of materials courses. Nominations for these awards are made by university materials departments. The Royal Charter, A T Green and R H Craven awards are given to students graduating from UK accredited materials courses for their superior performance together with other qualities and achievements which suggest a promising professional career. The James S Walker Award is presented for a student project or published paper on the subject of polymers.
More details of student prizes
The Institute makes two awards each year to students who are currently training or have recently completed training to become materials or minerals technologists. These awards are reserved for those who are not studying at degree level but who have left secondary education.
