SMEA events and activities
The SMEA has an extensive program of events open to all its members. Non- members are welcome to attend the vast majority of these events. Details are shown in the events calendar.
Lecture Program
The annual program centres around 7 lectures which are held through the autumn, winter and spring. The aim is to ensure members are aware of advances in technologies. The lectures are well attended and are held at Holiday Inn Royal Victoria – Sheffield on Tuesdays at 5.30 for 6.00.
Quiz Night & Buffet Supper
Each year a quiz night is held followed in the autumn. This year over 20 teams participated with the winners coming from Swinden Technology Centre. During a break in the events participants are rewarded with a pie and pea supper
Annual Dinner
Every year the Association hosts an annual dinner at the Cutlers Hall in Sheffield. In 2010 the dinner was run in cooperation with the Special Metals Forum and NAMTEC. Over 250 people attended
Ken Barraclough Memorial Lecture & Members Dinner
To commemorate the memory of Ken Barraclough an annual lecture with an historic theme is held in the spring of each year. This is followed by the member’s dinner
Guest Night
Every year a guest night is organised where members can bring along a guest. Previous visits have been to a variety of places including local historic houses and gardens. The visit planned for the spring of 2011 is to the Assay Office in Sheffield
Works Visit
To ensure that members are kept abreast of best practice visit is organised each year to a local manufacturing site. This year’s visit will be to Swinden Technology Centre in Rotherham

Celebrity Lecture
As part of the conference the Association invites a senior figure form Industry or Academia to present a lecture. Details of the lecture can be found on a separate web page.
