Shirley Davey
Dr. Shirley Davey is a Researcher on MATCH Project in the University of Ulster. She has over 8 years experience working in the Advanced Materials sector with both clinicians and industrialists. Her previous positions have involved carrying out research projects with Global companies, government agencies and local hospitals in the fields of biomaterials, nanotechnology and medical devices.
She graduated with a BEng (Hons) degree in Chemical Engineering in 1999 and an MSc in Polymer Engineering in 2000 from the Queens University of Belfast. Her PhD research completed in 2003 aimed to improve the longevity of materials used in joint replacements. She received 1st prize from the Royal Academy of Medicine for her research and was awarded the all Ireland Sir Bernard Crossland Prize. She has over 14 publications, is a co-investigator on grants totalling 1.7 million and is referee for a number of International Biomedical Journals. Shirley is Vice-Chair of the Irish North Materials Group, Council Member of the Bioengineering Society (NIBES) and has recently been elected to chair the Younger Members Committee.
She also enjoys being on the committee of national charities including the RNLI. Fundraising activities have included Aid trips to Africa and Eastern Europe. In her spare time she enjoys adventurous outdoor pursuits and was a former President of Queens Parachute club, she has attained dive leader scuba diver training and Yacht Master's qualifications for Sailing. She recently sailed across the Atlantic in a 40ft Yacht.
