Background
With the introduction of a New Travel Service for Pets with their own airport facility, more and more pet owners of all ages will be looking to take their beloved pets on holiday with them.
Pet transit is possible not just for those travelling from airports but also on trains, coaches and cars.
The Brief
You are to design and produce a new style functional and safe ‘Insect/small reptile travel pack’. This pack will be sold through pet shops and garden centres and will be for a variety of travel methods for small insects and reptiles.
Be innovative in your design proposals to make the pack creative but functional.
Your pack must be made from 75% Polythene. The other 25% may be a material of your choice eg. Carton Board, Corrugated, Rigid Plastic or other. This will help to give your pack structure and stability.
The pack must be designed to keep your ‘insect/reptile’ safe, secure and protected in transit. Because of the materials visibility benefits the ‘contents’ can be constantly monitored during travel and ventilation can be designed into the pack though the base materials.
The pack must be easy to store, and be reusable - consider a flat pack design.
You may incorporate a handling or carrying device to make travel and transportation easier.
This pack may be ‘home’ to your pet whilst you are away or it may be a short term travel pack. Pet shops, aquariums and pet centres, including veterinary practices, may also use the new style packs.
The outer and/or inner pack may carry appropriate graphics/branding/styling to make the pack attractive to the customer. It may also have an area or way of including care information relevant to the well being of your insect/reptile.
You may use a theme or different textures or patterns along with different images to enhance the overall look of the pack. Polythene film (LDPE) is widely used as a packaging material across the retail chain. Polythene films come in a wide variety of colours and thicknesses, although for your sample you will probably want to use clear, medium strength polythene film. BPI can send you sample polythene films to manufacture your pack together with an instruction sheet giving handy tips on how to fabricate polythene film into pack or product.
The Prize
British Polythene Industries Award of £400 to the school which in the opinion of the judges, has had the greatest success with its pupils’ entries. £100 will be awarded to the runner up school.
The Packaging Society will award £50 for the best supporting portfolio.
