Background
There are many different brands of soft drinks that are sold in both small and large cartons, and as concentrates to drink at home with water in larger plastic bottles.
The products are accessible often through a round plastic cap at the top, or with ‘the ready drink cartons, as a perforated hole with attached straw. They are frequently used for the children’s lunch boxes, as a drink on the ‘go’, picnics and every day use.
PET is a clear plastic which is used for bottles including drinks, rivalling glass for its transparency and clarity and lightweight appeal. Plastics are processed and converted into various packaging shapes and forms by several different conversion processes. PET offers the designer an opportunity to look at unusual and creative shaping and the embossing and de-bossing of images and forms on the bottle surface.
The Brief
The Ribena product is very distinctive and has a strong identity that is appealing to young children and parents as a healthy, fruity, fun drink to have. Currently this is sold in a carton.
You are to look at designing a new shape bottle/bottles to replace the current carton packaging.
A new and innovative bottle design that could be moulded into an unusual shape or form, which helps to not only be a functional pack, but also stands out on the shelf. A new shape that could be used for both ‘ready drink’ and ‘concentrate’.
You may consider how the product could be accessed or dispensed using a straw or other method/device that you think would be appealing, functional and fun.
Consider also what could be most functional for dispensing the concentrate and be suitable for the larger bottles making it easy to use at home with ‘mums and dads’.
The new shape bottle should be clear with graphic imagery used to give clear messages on the quality and healthy aspects of the drink, and its fruity contents. You may use images/type/styling and colour as well as shape to give your pack instant appeal to children and adults.
Environmental and recycling aspects of your design must be considered and evidenced in your support work that you have considered disposability and the recycling aspect of your pack.
Choose to produce 3d model of either:
1. Ready to drink Bottle with dispenser/straw (Children)
2. Large size Bottle for concentrate with dispenser for (mums and dads)
The Prize
The Logoplaste Award of £500 to the school which in the opinion of the judges, has had the greatest success with its pupils’ entries. They will also arrange a visit to one of their bottle manufacturing plants in the UK (and supply transport to do this).
The Packaging Society will award £50 for the best supporting portfolio.
