Introduction to the new-style, online Newsletter
Welcome to our ‘new look’ Newsletter. In fact, it will not only look new but the whole basis of its production and means of distribution is new. In the past, we have sought - not always successfully - to publish biennially in hard copy which we then distributed. For a number of reasons this approach was less satisfactory than we had originally hoped would be the case. A major problem was that if new information was obtained just after a publication date, it had to wait six months before it could be used, by which time it was stale or had been overtaken by events. Further problems were presented by delays in production resulting from other pressures on the IOM3 staff involved or the failure of expected copy to materialise at the expected time, albeit for perfectly understandable reasons.
The new approach is to produce this online version in which material can be included almost as soon as it is received. It will be our intention to notify members of the appearance of such new material by email and in this way members need to log on to look at the Newsletter only if they note the appearance of a piece of interest to them.
Linked below are the previous versions of the newsletters and other news items in PDF or MS Word format. Please also see our main News page for the most up to date news from Materials World and other divisions of IOM3.

Adhesion and Adhesives at the University of Surrey
The four main areas of activity in the field of adhesion and adhesives at the University of Surrey are outlined: structural adhesive bonding; pressure-sensitive adhesive research; the interfacial chemistry of adhesion; and smart adhesive research. This is a member-only feature page.

Toughening Epoxy Adhesives to Meet Today’s Challenges
There are many advantages that polymeric adhesives can offer compared to the more traditional methods of joining, but the structure of such thermosetting adhesives also generally results in brittle materials, with a poor resistance to crack initiation and growth. The incorporation of a second phase of dispersed rubbery particles into the epoxy polymer can greatly increase toughness for applications where a very high impact resistance is required for the adhesively-bonded joint. This is a member-only feature page.
The Adhesion, Adhesives and Composites research group at Imperial College undertake basic research in to the fracture characterisation of structural adhesive joints and composites. The development of fracture test protocols and the modelling of structure property relationships are both major themes of current research.

Adhesion Matters, Issue 4 (PDF 622k)
There has been a very long delay since the last appearance of a Newsletter and much has happened during this time. Meetings in our one-day, subject-specific series have continued with ‘Adhesion and Adhesives – Greener Techniques’, ‘Hot Melt Adhesives’, ‘NDE and Failure Analysis in Adhesion’, and ‘Developments in Epoxide Adhesives’.
