The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining grants membership at various grades to those who meet the relevant qualification, experience and contribution requirements. The current IOM3 grades are Fellow (FIMMM), Professional Member (MIMMM), Associate Member (AIMMM) and Technician Member (TIMMM) as well as Professional Graduate (ProfGradIMMM), Graduate (GradIMMM), Student and Affiliate membership.

Engineering Council (EngC) Registration

The Institute is one of 35 professional bodies in the UK that is licensed by the Engineering Council to place suitably qualified members on the ecUK Register of Engineers. The Register has three sections: Chartered Engineer (CEng), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Engineering Technician (EngTech). These titles are protected by the Engineering Council’s Royal Charter and may only be used by Registrants. Applications for IOM3 membership and EngC registration are often made at the same time.

The EngC mission is largely regulatory; to set and maintain realistic and internationally relevant standards of professional competence and ethics for engineers, technologists and technicians. A sister organisation, Engineering UK, aims to create a unified platform and voice for the UK’s science, engineering and technology industry. It works in partnership with business and industry, Government, education and the profession to improve the perception of science, engineering and technology in the UK. The driving force behind this partnership is the desire to ensure a supply of appropriately skilled individuals to meet the present and future needs of the UK. EngineeringUK runs scenta, an online gateway to the best in science, engineering and technology, and also publishes a dynamic monthly newsletter, Catalyst. Both EngC and EngineeringUK are part-funded by a small levy on Registrants. This is collected by the Institute as a separately identified component of the annual subscription.

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining is a Strategic Partner in scenta and is represented on EngineeringUK’s Registrants Panel. This Panel represents the views of 235,000 Registered engineers.

Science Council Registration

The Institute is also a member of the Science Council in the UK. The Science Council, representing over 300,000 scientists in more than 25 professional institutions, exists to promote the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and of education in science, pure and applied. The Institute can award the prestigious designation of Chartered Scientist (CSci) to individual scientists who meet the high standards for the qualification on behalf of the Science Council. The Science Council Registration fee is collected by the Institute as a separately identified component of the annual subscription.
