Positive Material Identification

19 Feb 2009, 11:41liddicott
If you are in the field of inspection and certification, what does PMI mean to you?  Analysis of every receipted item? every batch? a sample of every batch? or just confirmation that the unique identification on the item matches the test certificate and it is the specified material?  What if PMI has already been done by your suppliers?  I'd be interested in your comments since PMI appears to mean different things to different people.

PMI

You are correct in that PMI does mean different things to different people. In the forum of materials supply, some of our customers insist our own testing is per roll, per batch or per shipment or combinations of certain tests are done per roll, others per batch etc. With monitoring our own SPC and sharing that with our customers, in some cases, our customers have removed the need for their own goods inwards inspection as they have access to the results and SPC we generate on their product. I would say it depends on how statistically consistent the product is made and the test specification limits are. Hence the variability from person to person as to what it means. Depends on the supplier-customer relationship.

PMI

Thank you for your response to my query, it's consistent with discussions I've had with other people and the level required appears to be reflected in the confidence we have in our suppliers QC/QA systems ie its not "one size fits all"
