Past events in cementitious materials
2-3rd September 2013, University of Portsmouth
The Cement and Concrete Science Conference presents the latest advances related to the study and use of cementitious materials, for an audience of academics, students and industry. The conference featured both poster and oral presentations and selected papers are being invited to be expanded into full submissions for a special edition of Advances in Applied Ceramics.
The Conference Reception and Dinner was hosted on the HMS Warrior warship of 1860 with outstanding views across the Solent and of the Spinnaker Tower in Gunwharf Quays. This venue boasted an overall area of 37,546 square feet, almost the size of a full-size football pitch. With a propeller weighing-in at 26 tons, and 4 anchors at 5.6 tons each one can only marvel at the sheer size of this Victorian warship. The ship was the world’s first modern battleship combining an iron hull, armour plate and steam machinery. Designed and launched in 1861 to counter the threat posed by the French Navy she was the fastest and most heavily armoured ship of her day.
