Smart Materials & Systems Committee - mission
Aims
The aims of the Smart Materials and Systems Committee are to:
- Be the focus for the Institute's activities in the field of Smart Materials and Systems.
- Define the Scope of the Institute's activities in this area, with particular emphasis on the materials science and engineering, materials integration, processing and structural issues of smart systems.
- Act as a single point within the Institute for the collation and dissemination of information to Institute Members.
- Identify and organise programmes of meetings with the aim of promoting awareness, education and technical and scientific advances in this field.
- Identify publishing and other commercial opportunities for the Institute associated with this technical area.
- Interact with other bodies interested in Smart Materials and Systems e.g. other Engineering Institutions, BIS, EPSRC, commercial and academic research centres, with the aim of developing joint activities.
- Act as a policy centre thus enabling the Institute to respond to external agencies such as government departments , industrial companies, etc.
- To monitor the Institute's activities in this technical area and to carry out yearly reviews of the value of this committee to the Institute's business plan.
- To maintain a representation of the various technologies associated with the field of smart materials and systems.
- To be proactive with major Government initiatives, such as Foresight.
Objectives
The objectives statement of this committee will evolve as the committee's activities mature, however, the following represent the Committee's general objectives:
- To organise a minimum of one meeting per year, which contributes a positive surplus to the Institute's trading.
- Support Materials World with a series of quality, awareness and technical papers.
- To develop other trading activities, such as a commercial smart materials database.
- To establish the Institute amongst all the Engineering Institutions and Research bodies as a point of focus on Smart Materials an Systems, and to ensure that the Institute is associated with the planning of all future UK and European meetings in this field.
- To develop and maintain the Institute's online presence in the field of smart materials and systems.
