Light Metals Division - mission
Our Mission is:
To support and promote the industrial base for light metals manufacturing in the UK. This will be achieved by encouraging collaborative partnerships and joint interest groups within the supply chain providing recommendations for future technology requirements, growth, exploitation opportunities and enabling technologies. This will be further supported by the activities started and endorsed within the Materials Foresight report.
Other identified goals of the Division over time include:
Research and development - in line with Institute strategic targets of increasing the visibility of all materials in the education, specifically targeting secondary school initiatives and encouraging further education in the field. Pragmatically assist where possible in resource development and project sponsorships.
To look into setting up a Light Metals prize for applicants from university research departments, or to develop a similar promotional recognition scheme for younger members.
Continuing and Professional Education
In line with Institute strategy, enhance professional development available for members through targeted light metals sessions at conferences, and individual group meetings and workshops to respond to needs of members. Keep alongside other related Divisions and join to produce viable, short workshops and forums for members.
Ensure a continued dialogue with members of the Light Metals sector and encourage feedback, new ideas, new challenges for debate and be willing to listen and set agendas according to these contributions.
Achievements to date
The Light Metals Division welcomes input and suggestion for debate at meetings and in setting future agendas. We aim to use resources stringently and most discussion takes place by email apart from meetings which are set periodically, two or three times per year.
Following the Foresight example, the Light Metals group held a number of meetings and open sessions involving those from the titanium, magnesium and aluminium sectors. The findings of this SWOT analysis formed 3 sector reports, which have been forwarded to the Institute's Industry & Technology board, for input to Foresight. We must thank particularly those members who put the effort into producing these: John King and Bruce Davis (Magnesium); David Peacock and Mike Loretto (Titanium) and Roy Woodward and the Aluminium Federation for use of their findings in the report by Alfed for the Foresight exercise.
These reports cover the drivers and emerging technologies in these 3 key metals, and will be available on the web shortly. If, you would like copies sent to you, please contact us.
