Martin Kemp
Martin Kemp has had several related careers, moving from research into marketing and latterly into technology transfer and commercialisation. Starting his career with British Aluminium Company, he continued research into aluminium alloys when he joined the Defence Evaluation Research Agency (now QinetiQ) culminating in a PhD from Southampton University and receipt of the Donald Julius Groen Award from IMechE for his work on Aluminium-Lithium alloys. Moving into carbon fibre composites and ‘Smart’ technology he developed damage detection and self-repair systems. Moving into corporate marketing and business development, he developed ‘Buggles’ the dragonfly demonstrator for the 1996 Farnborough Airshow and a futuristic concept city car. After a secondment to the European Commission, he spent 5 years with DTI Global Watch Service covering Western Europe and specialising in applied nanotechnologies. After a brief interlude in an environmental consultancy role, he joined the Nanotechnology Knowledge Transfer Network (NanoKTN) as Theme Manager Engineering Applications.
‘The UK must continue to commercialise nanotechnology industry to maintain its technological edge. Linking up the various networks and stakeholder groups will be one of my key aims in order to help raise the understanding and widen the commercial application of nanotechnology’.
