Materials chemistry links
The committee seeks to establish strong working relationships within the Institute, with other UK based professional bodies, with industry and research organisations and with international bodies.
Liaison with other Institute committees such as the Structure of Materials, and High Temperature Materials Performance are a high priority. Joint activities are anticipated on biomaterials, electronic materials, environmental aspects of materials and possibly pharmaceutical products.
The committee has in the past developed links to other UK based professional bodies such as the RSC and SCI. Links to organisations such as the IoP and IEEE will also pursued.
Internationally, members of the committee are active members of SGTE (Scientific Group Thermodata Europe), Calphad, various European Union research programmes, such as the COST 531 action on lead-free solders (which ended in May 2007 and was superceded by Action MP0602), the COST 535 action on the thermodynamics of alloyed aluminides, and ASM/TMS. We are always looking to develop further international links. The committee also acts as the IoM3 link to APDIC (Alloy Phase Diagram International Commission).
Research
The members of the committee are active in materials research with an emphasis on phase equilibria and thermodynamics. As part of the commitment to APDIC (Alloy Phase Diagram International Commission), a report is prepared annually summarising the research activities within the UK in the field of phase equilibria and thermodynamics. This information is also given in tabular form.
