Photocopy service

Photocopies of publications can be provided subject to copyright. Photocopies can be sent by post or faxed. A self-service facility is available for visitors at IOM3 offices.

Library services

The Institute's Library Services provide not just a stock of books and other publications for visitors, but also a store of extremely valuable information. The Institute's main collections of books and journals are housed in the David West Library at 1 Carlton House Terrace in London, and in the Minerals and Mining library and Packaging Collection at the Boilerhouse (IOM3 Regional Office) in Grantham.

It is advisable to call us and make an appointment prior to your visit to the Library, to ensure that staff will be available. This is particularly the case, if visiting Grantham.

For literature searches, data compilation and the selective alert service, some time discussing the search topic with library staff is recommended.

 

Self-search facility - IMMAGE reference database

A unique service to the minerals and mining industry, the IMMAGE reference database covers hundreds of international minerals industry publications, available either online or as hard copy in IMM Abstracts. IMMAGE online is also offerered free of charge as a member benefit.

 

Loans

Most publications including reports and maps held by the Library may be borrowed by members resident in the UK.

 

Photocopies

Publications referenced on the IMMAGE minerals industry database, publications held on materials science and the Institute’s own publications can be supplied subject to copyright.

 

Minerals and mining serials holdings list

A serials holding list is available which includes all journal titles and series of reports, maps, conference proceedings etc held in the Minerals and Mining section of the library. These are available for photocopy requests or loans.

Literature searches

These provide a quick and effective way of scanning worldwide information. The Institute has access to databases covering materials science. Most searches provide the enquirer with a comprehensive list of references including the original publication details and an informative abstract.

 

Data compilation

For minerals industry enquirers in particular, data compilation of statistics, company information and production figures from published sources can also be undertaken.

IMMAGE

IMMAGE is the world's foremost database of references to the scientific and engineering literature of the international minerals industry. Covering material published from 1979, IMMAGE now contains over 100,000 references to published papers, books, reports and more.

Historical collection

The Institute owns a number of items of historical interest. Special collections include the Sir Henry Bessemer Collection, Percy's papers, antiquarian books, Dunlop/BTR research reports, minerals reports and the IMM historical collection. There are also subject indexes to mining industry literature from 1894 onwards and a collection of modern publications on mining history. The in-house journals of the Institute are available for consultation. Titles such as Journal of the Iron and Steel Institute 1869-1973 (JISI) and Journal of the Institute of Metals 1908-1973 (JIM) contains information of historical interest, such as obituaries, photographs, etc.
