Dr John Wilcox

John WilcoxJohn WilcoxJohn has been an active member of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining since 1979, serving initially on the Younger Members’ Committee and then as Secretary of the Scottish Association for Metals from 1983 until 1998.  This led ultimately to his appointment as a Regional Consultant to the Institute, a salaried part-time position which he held between 1994 and 2003.   John is currently a member of the Institute’s Accreditation and Professional Development Committee.

John maintains strong links with other engineering institutions in Scotland, acting as both Secretary of EngineeringScotland, maintaining the website www.engineeringscotland.org and publishing a combined programme of meetings, and also as Director of SCOTETA, the Scottish Engineering and Technology Association.

His career started as a laboratory based metallurgist with Corus (then British Steel), working at first at Corby and later at Motherwell.  With the contraction of that industry, he moved to become a lecturer in Engineering Materials at the then Bell College of Technology, Hamilton, Lanarkshire, now part of the University of the West of Scotland.  A period as a business consultant followed, providing technical advice to the UK Government before he established my own business providing education, training and personal development services.

John is currently employed as Engineering Training Manager for Exova, formerly Bodycote Materials Testing, where he has responsibility for the training and development of ~650 staff working in some 50 locations across Europe.
