Petroleum & Drilling Engineering Division - information for members

Whether you are a long-time member of the IOM3 or have recently joined, I would like to welcome you to the Petroleum & Drilling Division (P&DE) microsite (web pages).

The division exists to support the upstream oil and gas industry by providing a focus for the exchange of knowledge on all aspects of education, science, research and manufacture and to provide networking opportunities; professional development; and a platform for membership growth.

The website is one tool for communication with the members with email and technical meetings being the main others. To ensure that we can contact interested members, please make sure that you have selected Petroleum & Drilling Engineering Division in your profile.

Technical Meetings

Our technical meetings tend to be held under the banner of the Mining Institute of Scotland and we usually use video conferencing facilities to allow a wider attendance at the meetings. If you have access to video conference facilities and would like to join a technical presentation, please get in touch. We are also investigating the use of utilising web based meetings.

The 2011/12 programme of technical meetings is as follows:-

5 Oct

AGM and Presidential Address: Prof Babs Oyenyin

9 Nov

Sustainability: Energy, Economics & Evolution: Alan Owen

7 Dec

Extended Reach Drilling

7 Feb

Sakhalin Development: Mike Gunningham

8 Feb

Young Persons' Lecture Competition  - Scottish Heat

29 Feb

Mining in Columbia: Martin Downing

The meetings will be advertised as an "Event" on the microsite front page.

The presentations are available to members on the website after the meeting has taken place. These can be found by selecting the presentations tab. If you have not logged into the website, there will be a prompt for you to input your details before you can access the presentation.

Continuing Professional Development (CPD)

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is the systematic maintenance, improvement and broadening of knowledge and skill, and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional, managerial and technical duties throughout the practitioner's working life.

The Institute obliges all members to pursue a planned and active programme of personal development in order to maximise their professional competence. Further details and guidelines

Members should keep themselves up to date in technical and other areas directly or indirectly relevant to their occupations.

The Petroleum & Drilling engineering division runs occasional courses which can help you with your CPD. Courses to be run in 2012 will be published on the microsite.

Upgrading your Membership

The membership section (linked from "Become a member" in the top right hand corner of all site pages) gives information about the process of upgrading your membership. This can seem like a daunting process but is usually quite straightforward once you get started. Any of the board members of the P&DE Division will help you with the process.

Accreditation of Company Training Schemes

The P&DE division have been working with the IOM3 membership section to progress the accreditation of company training schemes. Such accreditation will demonstrate a company's commitment to its employees, confirm that competencies for professional recognition have been gained and will ease the submission of membership upgrade applications for those who successfully complete the companies training scheme.

If you would like more information on this, please contact Martin Cox (see contacts page for contact details).

Website

We would like to keep the website up-to-date and refreshed with news and technical articles. If you have any ideas for articles or news items, please get in touch with me at margaret.copland@bp.com
