Gas Release Valve

14 Aug 2008, 11:19Bowers

Dear Colleague

Can you help me or point me in the right direction please?

You may have received a picture by e-mail yesterday of some material, nylon/pe I believe. This material is wound on the roll and we have been asked to quote on this printed material.

My problem is that the material has a "gas release" valve. I have never seen this before and I am not sure how its applied? I think its applied after the material has been printed and laminated, separate process?

The product is a medical device and once packed its sterilised by gas/liquid. The valve lets gas in and out of the pack.

The above information is all I have.

Do you know how the valve is attached? If so do you know of a company who can do this process?

If you did not receive an e-mail and you think you can help, please contact either Tom Harkin - details below or Julie Bowers on julie.bowers@iom3.org who will be happy to e-mail the picture.

"Gas release valve"

When viewing the pack photo this appeared to be a small Tyvek® breather section applied to cover a circular hole punched in the film web. Tyvek® breather sections are applied by heat sealing. The breather section will allow air pressure equilisation between the pouch inside and outside thus avoiding bursting when travelling in unpressurised aircraft. Larger breather sections are used to facilitate humidification of pack interiors when sterilisation by Eto is planned. The breather section is necessary to permit entry and exit of water vapour, prevent package failure during the vacuum phase of the sterilisation cycle and facilitate degassing at the completion of the cycle.
