The Foresight Programme

The UK Foresight Programme brings together the voices of business, government, the science base and others to look at what might happen in the future and what we need to do now to secure long-term competitive advantage and quality of life.

How is the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining involved?

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining has been actively involved in Foresight since its launch in 1993. The Institute's technical divisions have the range of expertise to provide informed input into Foresight - they contributed to the Materials Panel Report, 'Materials: Shaping our Society'. Copies of the report are available from Frances Perry, Tel 020 7451 7324.

Foresight reports
Six foresight reports for the materials sector were produced by the Institute in December 2003. The former Institute of Materials produced a series of six reports between 1995 and 1998 on various sectors of industry, through its Materials Strategy Commission and Foresight Panel Technology Working Party:

  • Priority Topics for Future Biomaterials Development
  • Fuelling a Greener Economy – the importance of materials for fuel cells and related technologies
  • Functional Materials – future directions
  • Smart Materials for the 21st Century
  • A Survey of Spin-Out and Start-Up Companies in the Materials Sector
  • Mapping out the Future for the Road Ahead

For information about these reports and those produced by the Materials Strategy Commission and Foresight Panel Technology Working Party 1995-1998 contact the Institute's Library Services using our online enquiry form
