JOINING THE INSTITUTE OF MATERIALS, MINERALS AND MINING (IOM3)

 

Who can join IOM3?
Anyone can become a member of IOM3 – you don’t have to have an academic qualification in materials, minerals or mining. Our Affiliate grade is for anyone who would like to take advantage of our information resources, networking opportunities or online services. Other grades are for those with appropriate technical qualifications and experience.

What are the grades of membership?
Grades of membership range from Student for those starting out on their career, through Technician, to Professional Member and Fellow, for senior members with an established reputation in materials, minerals and mining technology. The Affiliate grade is for anyone interested in materials, minerals or mining science and technology – you do not need any formal qualifications.

I used to be a member. How do I rejoin?
If your membership has lapsed within the last 5 years, we should still have an electronic record and can reinstate you readily, subject to confirmation of your status. Simply Email membership@iom3.org or phone +44 (0)1782 221717

What is my membership number?
Your membership number is printed on the tear-off membership card issued with your last membership renewal notice, and is also printed on the wrapper of your free Institute magazine (Materials World, Packaging Professional or Clay Technology). How can I get a replacement membership card?
Email membership@iom3.org or phone +44 (0)1782 221717. Please note these are printed in batches and hence it could be some time before a replacement batch run is ordered.

Can I pay subscriptions online?
Yes, just log in (or if you are already logged in, go to My Profile) and select Pay Subscriptions (you can also print off receipts for all processed and accepted payments to claim back or for tax purposes).

I've moved/changed company - how do I update my contact details?
Log in and select My Profile where you can view and update any address or contact details we currently hold.

I've stopped receiving my free magazine - how can I find out why?
Have you moved house or job? Are your contact details up to date? Log in and check My Profile to update the address details we currently hold.

How do get I my PIN/password?
To log in to the website and access member-only services and content, you need a username and PIN. Your username is (normally) your surname. To obtain your PIN online, go to the Log in page and use the Forgot Password link. You will receive an email allowing you to reset your password.

If we do not have your current email address on our membership database, then you will not be able to use this facility. In this case please contact the Member Services department to check we have your correct email address and they will also be able to advise you of your PIN.

How do I get a receipt for my membership subscriptions?
Log in and go to My Profile, and click the Print Receipts link. If a new request, click on Unprinted receipts and view or print the payment you wish a receipt for. If you have already printed a receipt and need another copy, click on Printed receipts. Please note if you have just paid online or only recently paid your fees you may have to wait 24 hours to get a receipt whilst we process and gain authorisation or clearance of any payments.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS - REGISTRATION AS SCIENTIST, ENGINEER OR ENVIRONMENTALIST

 

What is meant by Registration?

The Institute holds licences to award various professional qualifications along with Institute grades of membership:

  • Science based : Chartered Scientist (CSci)
  • Engineering based, Engineering Technician (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Chartered Engineer (CEng)
  • Environmental : Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv)

In theory you can apply for any or all of these, subject to meeting the criteria for each, eg CSci, CEng and CEnv but not EngTech + IEng + CEng.

Can I register my areas of interest? How does the Institute relate to these?
The Institute has Technical Divisions and Societies which act as special interest groups. These reflect the disciplines covered by IOM3.

To affiliate with one or more of these groups, log in to the website and choose your technical subjects interests under My Profile. You will then receive information about any IOM3 activities in those subject areas.

Does the Institute have local meetings?

IOM3 has a network of over 60 local societies, what maybe known elsewhere as “branches” or “chapters”. Run by members for members, these provide networking at a local level via technical meetings and social get togethers as well as lecture competitions. Members are welcome to attend any meeting anywhere in the world, usually free of charge unless it involves a dinner for example. For details, visit our Local Societies Events Diary.
