The IOM3 monthly members' magazine is crammed full of fascinating news and features about the latest developments in materials technology. Members of our Schools Affiliate Scheme receive a subscription as part of their membership.

Education & Training

The Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining caters for students, teachers and further learners at all stages of the education system from secondary school to FE, HE and continuing professional development.

Accredited programmes
The Institute is licensed by the Engineering Council UK (ECUK) to accredit programmes in the UK and abroad leading to academic and professional qualifications in engineering and other areas of materials science. See our list of UK universities offering IOM3-accredited qualifications, apply for IOM3 accreditation for your own programme, or see our guidelines on further learning.

Approval for CPD
The Institute also approves events for professional development purposes.

Packaging courses
The Institute provides a range of industry-recognised packaging qualifications including the Diploma in Packaging Technology and Certificate in Packaging, as well as tailored courses for companies.

Clay Technology courses
The Institute provides a range of industry-recognised qualifications including the Certificate in Clay Building Products and Clay Quarry Management.

Wood Technology courses
The Institute offers a range of industry-recognised wood technology courses as a result of the merger in 2009 with the Institute of Wood Science, now known as IWSc: The Wood Technology Society.

Schools and Student Starpack Awards

Designed to attract the cream of the UK's young people to a career in packaging design and technology, the Student and Schools Starpack Awards play an important role in fostering talent within the nation's schools, colleges and universities. The Schools Starpack Awards provide computer technology and cash prizes for the schools, while the winners of the Student Starpack Awards enjoy expenses-paid work experience and trips abroad.

Schools Affiliate Scheme

The IOM3 Schools Affiliate Scheme (SAS) aims to support the teaching of topics related to materials, minerals and mining in the science, design technology and geology curricula from Key Stage 3 upwards. For an annual fee of just £30 per school, members receive regular support material and information updates, as well as access to conferences for teachers and visits to schools.

PIABC

PIABC accredits qualifications in packaging. PIABC is a professional awarding body operating within the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining

Design exchange

The Materials and Design Exchange (MaDE) is a Materials Knowledge Transfer Network initiative aimed at facilitating the development of design skills to exploit the benefits of new materials and processes. MaDE brings together the communities of design and materials technology in order to stimulate innovation, promote the transfer of materials knowledge and improve the competitiveness of UK business.
