Diploma in Packaging Technology - course details, fees and downloads

The Level 5 Diploma in Packaging Technology is internationally recognised as the premier degree level qualification for packaging professionals, acknowledging the high standards of knowledge and skill required in an extremely specialised industry.

The Diploma course is divided into four units, and students must satisfactorily complete all units to gain the Diploma. However students may choose to study individual units if preferred, to gain a Certificate of Achievement. The Diploma and other courses offered by the Institute lead to qualifications awarded by the PIABC which is an awarding body recognised by the UK Government’s OfQual for providing qualifications for the packaging industry.

Successful completion of this course prepares students for progression in the packaging industry to a position where they can assume responsibility for packaging in a company at any point in the supply chain. Success also provides students with an entry level qualification for the MSc in Packaging Technology at the University of Loughborough and Brunel University.

Candidates will normally be expected to have a minimum of 1 GCE A level and 5 GCSEs at grade A–C, or equivalent, including one science subject, in addition to the key skills of numeracy, communication and information technology, or the Certificate in Packaging. Industrial experience can be used as an alternative to formal qualifications. Overall it is expected that courses will take approximately 480 hours.

Study options

Students have a variety of study options from which to choose. There are three routes (listed below) to qualifying for the Diploma, all of which utilise the same syllabus and study materials. After completing the coursework, there are four examinations to be taken followed by the submission of a 5,000 word assignment.

  • Intensive Course - An intensive 15-day course split into three blocks of 5 days each plus essential self-directed study in your own time.

  • Regional Courses - Attend a course for 3 days a month over 5 months based in a company's premises.

  • Online Learning Course - Study at work, at home or wherever, in your own time and at your own speed.

Intensive 15-day Course

An intensive 15-day course split into three blocks of 5 days each, plus essential self directed study in your own time.

This popular residential course is held at The Packaging Society, Grantham. The course combines classroom activity and self-directed study, offering students the opportunity to cover the Diploma syllabus in a relatively short time. In addition many students benefit and learn from the interaction with those from other parts of the industry.

Each topic is taught via a series of lectures, practical and workshop sessions. Evening study is essential during the three blocks of 5 days. Delegates will also be required to conduct their own studies in the intervening period between the taught sessions and in the period leading up to the examinations.

The course is held three times per year. Students may choose their preferred timetable from the dates available each year.

Regional Onsite Courses

Regional courses allow you to study at a venue local to you.

This popular study option enables students to combine classroom lectures with private study in their own time between the taught sessions.  Some sessions include visits to packaging factories and many students benefit from the interaction with students from other parts of the industry.

The lecture sessions cover the Diploma syllabus, and the course is an excellent method of preparing for the Diploma examinations.
