Please ensure that the brief being entered has been thoroughly read and understood by both tutors and students. Entries which do not satisfy the brief will not be considered for an award.
Brief A - Food on the move
The sponsor: The Benson Group
The brief in brief: redesign the packaging for a lunchtime wrap and an individual cake.
The prize: £500 to the winning student.

Brief B - Festival pack
The sponsor: British Polythene Industries plc
The brief in brief: design a reusable ‘festival pack’.
The prize: £300 for the most innovative design.

Brief C - Blue Sky soft drinks
The sponsor: Britvic Soft Drinks
The brief in brief: the challenge for you is to come up with an idea that looks at the future of soft drinks and the packaging used for then and, maybe, some ideas about what could be done with these big soft drinks brands by launching them in categories other than just ‘beverages’.
The prize: In recognition of the clever thinking and the quality of work that has gone into the entry, the winner will be
awarded £500.

Brief D - Energy structural bottle design
The sponsor: The Coca-Cola Company
The brief in brief: gather information by reviewing the market and come up with a new energy bottle shape for Coca Cola’s existing energy brands.
The prize: The Coca-Cola Company offers £500 and a trip with accommodation to a continental destination; this could be Brussels, Vienna or Warsaw where you will present the concept to the European energy marketing manager.

Brief E - New uses for corrugated board
The sponsor: DS Smith Packaging
The brief in brief: offer a pack, made from corrugated board, as an alternative to any existing packaging made with other materials AND/OR design a non packaging product, currently made from other materials, such as plastics, metals, wood or composites, using corrugated board.
The prize: £500 for 1st prize, £250 for 2nd prize and £125 for 3rd prize for the three most outstanding entries.
It is important that the existing pack from which you have taken your idea from, is sent in with your entry.

Brief F - Senior-friendly, child-resistant packaging
The sponsor: Global Closure Systems
The brief in brief: design a new closure system or pack, that will pass the child resistance test (ISO 8317) and be easy to open by the elderly and other adults with limited grip.
The prize: For the winner there is a cash prize of £300, but the real prize comes if we (Global Closure Systems) feel your idea fully answers the brief and we feel it has a high chance of passing the ISO test. If this is the case will then invite you into our company to complete the design with one of our experts and then make your design a reality. We will spend the money to make the prototype tool and then test the samples with children and adults to make sure we can pass the ISO8317 test. If your idea is novel and we can protect your intellectual property, we will apply for a patent, although GCS will own the patent and IP rights you will be named as the inventor.

Brief G - Premium end packaging for wine
The sponsor: Logoplaste
The brief in brief: design and model a premium end packaging for wine to be filled into; moving away from the glass bottle; and one that offers a distinctive unique shape, using a suitable raw material.
The prize: All expenses paid trip to Portugal to visit the design and technology facilities and meet Logoplaste's packaging designers and see the fascinating world of designing packaging of the future.

Brief H - Busy chocolate
The sponsor: Nestlé Product Technology Centre, York
The brief in brief: design a new assortment of chocolates and a gift pack that is relevant to the modern world in which we live.
The prize: £500 to the winning student.
