Certificate in Packaging - course details, fees and downloads
The Certificate in Packaging is designed to meet the training needs of a wide variety of people involved in packaging, from the new entrant to the industry who wants the best possible preparation for a career in the industry, to design, production, management, sales and marketing or purchasing staff who need to deepen their understanding of this vital and complex discipline.
The Certificate comprises a classroom based core unit, along with 12 online options, of which students have to successfully complete a selection of to gain the Certificate in Packaging.

Core unit
The core unit comprises a four day course covering:
- Understanding the role and functions of packaging.
- Understanding the major packaging materials and how they are combined to form packaging componants.
- Understanding the packaging development process.
- Understanding packaging costs and quality systems.
- Understanding the relationshipbetween packaging and the environment.
Through the core unit course, students also have the opportunity to become familiar with the course as a whole, and to be introduced to the simple-to-use, online learning system. This unit is assessed by a two hour written examination.
Fees
The cost of the course is £1,730.00 ex VAT*
This fee includes:
- Attendance for the 4-day core unit with:
- The Fundamentals of Packaging Technology textbook
- A folder with extensive supplementary notes and presentation materials
- Associated administration documents
- Access to the online course materials for the option units chosen, plus:
- Online tutor support for each unit
- Hard copy Welcome Pack
- PIABC Examination fees
- Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining Affiliate Membership for one year from the date of registration
Not included:
- Travel, accommodation and subsistence costs associated with the core unit
- On-line internet fees incurred
- Examination resit fees

Online options
Candidates then select a further three or four option units for online study from the following list to complete their certificate (must add up to 8 credits):
- Packaging Legislation, standards & regulations. 3 credits.
- Packaging Line Operations. 2 credits.
- Packaging and the hazards of storage and distribution. 2 credits.
- The relationship between packaging design and marketing. 2 credits.
- The properties, manufacture and use of paper and carton board as packaging materials. 3 credits.
- The properties, manufacture and use of rigid plastic packaging. 3 credits.
- the properties, manufacture and use of flexiable packaging materials. 3 credits.
- the use of printing and decoration for packaging. 3 credits.
- The use of labelling and coding for packaging materials. 2 credits.
- The properties, manufacture and use of corrugated board in packaging. 3 credits.
- The properties, manufacture and use of rigid metal in packaging. 3 credits.
- The properties, manufacture and use of glass in packaging. 3 credits.

This means that students can choose where and when they study, and work at their own pace.
