Casting sensors into light metals

Scientists at the Fraunhofer Institute in Bremen, Germany, are developing a manufacturing technique to integrate electric sensors, actuators and components into light metals while they are being cast. This would create ‘intelligent’ parts that could monitor components’ stability or track their movements.

Researchers have created insulating ceramic and polymer materials to house the electronic components and protect them from the high temperatures of casting, which can rise above 700ºC.

Casting the net – online inspection of steel

A novel laser-electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT) technique for detecting surface and internal defects in cast steel early in the manufacturing process is being explored by international steelmaker Corus.

New horizons – steel processing

In every year of the millennium so far, more steelplant has been commissioned than was put to work in the whole of the previous decade.
