Barry Lye CEng CSci FIMMM - Honorary Overseas Secretary

Barry LyeBarry LyeBarry was educated in Ceramic Technology at Staffordshire University and immediately became a member of the then Institute of Ceramics and British Ceramic Society, which at that time was almost obligatory and certainly expected by senior personnel in the industry who were members themselves. He was initially employed by Harrison-Mayer Limited (Cookson Ceramics), then a leading producer of frits, glazes, colours and raw materials for the ceramic and container glass industries. Barry was involved in the development of frits and glazes for the then vibrant whitewares sector, eventually also becoming the Director responsible for the above products and the sourcing and sale of various complementary minerals.

His career continued as General Manager of Ferro GB Glaze and Colour group along with the Vitreous Enamel, Engineering and Frit Development and Production Divisions. He then became involved in the development, preparation and manufacture of prepared raw materials and ceramic bodies, mainly white firing quality earthenware, fine china and bone china, in plastic, casting slip and spray dried form.

Barry has sat on and been involved in many technical committees and boards within the industry, including the Coalition for Safe Ceramic Ware in Washington DC, the Ceram Council, the Ceramic Industry Forum and the British Ceramic Confederation. He is currently in charge of the technical aspects of sourced tableware for Arc International, a large French glass manufacturing company which sources tableware from various manufacturers in all parts of the world.

Barry is a Fellow of the Institute, a Chartered Engineer and Chartered Scientist. He also serves as a member of the IOM3 membership committee, and has served as President of the Institute.
