Autumn Open Day programme
REGISTRATION FOR THE 2011 EVENTS IS NOW CLOSED. The information below is for reference only. Details of the 2012 programme will be available from Easter .
The Autumn Open Day programme was launched in 2002 and is administered by the Institute on behalf of the UK’s accredited materials departments.
The aim of these events is to give teachers an opportunity to take students studying A-level Physics, Chemistry and Design Technology along to a lab environment to perform experiments and investigations using equipment which is not available in schools. It is also a chance to find out more about materials science and engineering in a world class research establishment. The events are free for schools to attend, you just need to organise transport to and from the venue.
Typical activities include tensile and impact testing and optical and electron microscopy, though the exact programme varies from venue to venue. There is often some flexibility on the theme of the activities offered to link in with the particular course of study. The sessions typically last from two hours to a full day and are usually on a Wednesday afternoon as this is when the labs in the university are generally empty.
In 2011 events will be running at venues across the UK and the dates available are as follows:
