3.       Opportunities for growth of Division Community or constraints

Efforts have continued to identify the IMMa membership within the wider IOM3 community.  With the assistance of the membership office, a list of over 2200 members has been produced, the vast majority of which have e-mail addresses.   This list represents a 100% increase over the number that had been identified 12 months ago, but it is still only about half the number of potential IMMa members believed to exist within the IOM3.

4      Technical programme

A launch event for IMMa was held in June 2008.  This half-day event, which was held at 1CHT, comprised the launch of the PERC code on resource and reserve ore estimates for stock market purposes, the public launch of IMMa, followed by the annual prestige lecture and a buffet reception.  The prestige lecture was given by John McGagh, Head of Innovation at Rio Tinto and was entitled, “The Mine of the Future”. The launch event was attended by 120 people.

The annual Commodities Day, jointly organised by MinSouth and IMMa, was held in November.  This year the featured metal was nickel and the event was sponsored by the Nickel Institute.

5      Foresight chart developments

     6   Professional membership developments

IMMa had exhibition stands for publicity and recruitment purposes at the following miningconferences:

Global Capital Mining conference.  October1/2, Glaziers Hall, Southwark, SE1.

Living with Minerals, CBI conference. November 3.  QE II Conference Centre, Westminster, W1.

Mines and Money.  December 2/3.  London Design Centre, Islington, N1.

7      Institute Federalism

IMMa is an organisation created to link the four minerals divisions.  Three times per year, the IMMa committee holds open meetings to which all board members of the four divisions are invited, together with the secretaries of the mining-related local societies, in an effort to encourage a sense of community and common purpose amongst the minerals-related IOM3 membership.  The formation of IMMa has reunited the minerals community within the IOM3 and has partially overcome the sense of alienation and loss of identity felt by many IMM members after the merger with the IoM.  IMMa is now working hard to get itself known to the outside world.

8      National and international linkages with other Societies /Institutes

IMMa intends to establish links with other national and overseas mining and metallurgy organisations.  Approaches have been made to the IChemE with a view to coordinating activities in the process engineering area.

An important joint committee, in which IMMa plays a leading role, is the Pan European Resources and Reserves Reporting Committee (PERC). This committee links IMMa with the Geological Society of London, the European Federation of Geologists (EFG) and the Institute of Geologists of Ireland (IGI).  The purpose of this committee is to develop a European code of practice and methodology for reporting ore resources and reserves for investors in mining equities traded on European stock markets.

9      Government interfaces

10      Publications

Pubilicity pamphlets have been produced to advertise (i) IMMa and its services to members; and (ii) the PERC reporting code.
