3. Opportunities for growth of Division Community or constraints
New membership: The Division has worked to expand its membership and collaborations through new Board members from universities and industry:
Dr David Farrar, Smith & Nephew
Dr Geoffrey Andrews, Ranier Technology
Prof Roger Feneley, Independent (retired Urology surgeon)
Prof Jonathan Knowles, UCL
Dr Rachel Williams, University of Liverpool
Dr Matthew O’Donnell, RepRegen Ltd
Mr David Sharp, Ipswich Hospital.
The Division is active with other IoMMM Divisions or Committees, most notably:
Smart Materials
Nano-Materials
Surface Engineering.
The Division aims to address this further in 2011.
4. Technical programme
a) Events run in previous 12 months
Royal Society of Chemistry Biomaterials meeting, Durham - 13 January 2010 - Low level involvement - No report
IMechE Biomechanics and Use of Materials in Spinal Surgery, London - 25 March 2010 - Division member helped organize, with joint seat in both institutions - 55 delegates, good collaboration between spinal and surgery. Insufficient time for discussion – suggested it could be held over multiple days in future.
UKSB, Glasgow - 1-2 July 2010 - Strong engagement of Division members - Successful meeting: around 100 attendees. Postgraduate presentations and poster of a very high standard.
ESB, Tampere, Finland - 11-15 September 2010 - Strong engagement of Division members - Good, well-organised meeting: 800 delegates. The focus on materials as opposed to tissue engineering was welcomed.
Clinicians Meeting – Let’s Face It – A Translational Approach, London - 24 November 2010 - BMAD Division organised - Meeting attracted 50 delegates (despite clash with students protest) and stimulated lively debate. Successful networking between clinicians and materials scientists
Innovate 2010, London - 13 October 2010 - Attended - Sessions on stratified medicines and dragons den for biomedical companies.
IMechE, Engineering in Medicine: The Changing Role of Engineers in Orthopaedics, London - 14 December 2010 - Attended - Very good summary of non-invasive fracture repair techniques, active implants, joint modelling and market failures. Good mixture of materials science and other engineering disciplines.
b) Events planned for next 12-24 months
IOM3 / IMechE events - various events - Co-sponsored by Division
UKSB 2011, University of Greenwich - 30 June/1 July 2011 - Co-sponsored by Division
ESB, Dublin - tbc - Division members involved in organisation
Clinicians meeting with IMechE leading, London - tbc - Division developed and now running collaboratively with IMechE
Frontiers in Polymer Science, Madeira - tbc - Division members helping with programme
IMechE – Incontinence the Engineering Challenge VIII, London - 7-8 December 2011 - Division members help organize and co-sponsor
Congress 2012, London - June 2012 - Division is supporting session on sport and medicine
Clinicians meeting, London - tbc - Division to organise, two potential themes: eye surgery and urology
5. Foresight / Innovation and Growth
The HealthTech and Medicines started development of a response to the BIS/DoH Life Sciences Review.
The HealthTech and Medicines KTN with the Royal Academy of Engineering developed a paper on the need for engineering and materials in Regenerative Medicine.
Division Members were active in both of the above.
The Division note the Royal Society of Chemistry report, focusing on medical and healthcare.
6. Professional membership developments
Division members have been successfully put forward for Fellowship status.
7. National and international linkages with other Societies /Institutes
The Division is strongly connected to IMechE which is the most active other Professional Institution in complementary space to BMAD, and two other key Societies where there is mutual membership are the UK Society for Biomaterials (UKSB) and the European Society for Biomaterials (ESB). The Division also continues to work closely with the HealthTech and Medicines KTN.
Other Committees which the Division engages with include:
- Association of Institutions concerned with Medical Engineering (AIME)
- Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)
- Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM)
- Tissue and Cell Engineering Society (TCES)
- Royal Academy of Engineering UK Focus for Biomedical Engineering.
The Co-sponsored IMechE event on incontinence has reached such prominence that the coordinators are now invited to the main Chicago meeting.
8. Government interfaces
Interface with the Technology Strategy Board is via the HealthTech and Medicines KTN, and many members are engaged on EPSRC Committees.
9. Publications
The Division has attempted to update the Website, with new systems in place to enter information but this still proves a challenge for the Division which is mostly made up of full time employees. Materials World has featured many biomedical features, many of which have generated from the Division.
10. Awards/prize
James Kirkpatrick was awarded the Chapman Medal.
The process for awarding the medal has been changed at Division level. From now on the January meeting will be held at the end of the month, allowing all nominations to be received in the same format, with the recommendation result confirmed at this meeting.
11. Other matters
Prof Serena Best was nominated and voted to remain as Chair for a further term.
Mrs Sue Dunkerton was nominated and voted to remain as Secretary.
